How to Calculate Thread Consumption for Garments?

There is a standard formula for determining thread cost for apparel products. In that formula, you get the multiplier factor by machine type and stitch class. You just need to multiply the seam length with those factors to determine the thread cost. This way you can estimate the total thread requirement for making a garment.

The actual thread consumption for a unit length of seam depends on the following factors.

Sewing class

Stitches per Inch (SPI)

Seam Thickness (Fabric Thickness)

Thread tension

Thread count (thickness of sewing thread)

So you are advised to calculate the garment thread cost by yourself. You can develop a multiplier factor according to your product category and requirements using the following steps.

Step 1: To calculate the thread ratio, you need a sewing machine, fabric and sewing thread that will be used for bulk production. For fabric and thread, you can take same thickness and same thread count if actual is not available.

Step 2: Sew a seam 12 cm long and trim 1 cm from both ends to leave a 10 cm seam.

Step 3: Unwind both the needle thread and the bobbin thread from the seam. Remove the crimp from the open thread and measure its length in cm. usually, this will be longer than the seam length. Now find the quotient by dividing the thread length by the seam length. Unassuming needle thread length is 12.5 cm then the needle thread multiplication factor is 12.5/10 or 1.25.

Using this method you can find thread usage factors of any type of machine.

Step 4: Calculating the total thread cost is easy once you factor in the cost. Measure the seam length of all garment operations and get the thread requirement by multiplying the thread consumption factor. Add 5% wastage of thread for thread trimmed from each end of the seam.
